Special impellers: vortex, grinder, rubber…
The clever designs used when the liquid is dirty, stringy, or the pump must start dry.

The right tool for the mess
You would not mop up a spilled bowl of spaghetti with a kitchen sponge. You would grab a shovel, a sieve or scissors.
Pumps meet messes too: sewage full of wet wipes, sand, fish, or muddy water. For each one, engineers invented a special impeller.

Fewer vanes, wider channels
Sewage pumps often use a with just one or two vanes, so the channels are wide enough for large solids.
Set the vanes to 2 and compare the gaps with 6 vanes.
Challenge: With 2 vanes, how much wider is each channel than with 6? (Hint: the space is shared by fewer vanes.)

Vortex: don’t touch the dirt
A hides at the back of the casing. It spins the liquid into a whirlpool, and the whirlpool moves the liquid — most of it never touches the vanes.
Rags and solids pass straight through. The price: it is much less efficient than a normal impeller.

Grinder: chop it first
A has a sharp spinning cutter at the inlet that chops solids into small bits, so they can travel through narrow pipes.
They are used where sewage must be pushed uphill through small pipes — for example from a basement toilet.

Rubber: bend and squeeze
A has soft rubber vanes in an off-centre casing. As they pass the tight side they bend and squeeze liquid out, like wringing a sponge.
It is and gentle with food, which is why boat engines use it to pull in cooling water. But it must never run dry: without water the rubber overheats and tears in seconds.

Even gentler
Fish farms move live fish with screw-centrifugal impellers: a single long vane that spirals like a corkscrew, gentle enough that the fish swim out unharmed.
Tiny “regenerative” impellers with dozens of small vanes around the rim make surprisingly high pressure for their size — used in some small boosters and fuel pumps.
📌 Remember this
When the liquid is messy, the impeller changes: channel impellers have wide passages, vortex impellers let a whirlpool do the work, grinders chop solids, and flexible rubber impellers self-prime but must never run dry.
